<Interstitium> explores fragile and fiery landscape of Costa da Morte (Coast of Death) in Galicia - a region scarred by the frequent bushfires that are intensifying with the effects of climate change. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and changing weather patterns have turned this land into a tinderbox. Eucalyptus plantations which were introduced for their economic value fuel the fires with their oily and flammable foliage.
Shot on infrared film, the series renders the landscape in an otherworldly spectrum revealing a world beyond human sight. The film’s sensitivity to invisible wavelengths becomes a metaphor for unseen cycles of decay and transformation, destruction and rebirth. What emerges is a meditation on the liminal space between endings and beginnings, the interstice where life reclaims itself in unfamiliar forms.
Cameraless photography and chemigrams created with found objects from sites undergoing regeneration have served as conceptual frameworks for visualising the invisible.
